Love to read about this. There are still a lot of race issues going on here that are getting white washed, pardon the pun, too. Statistically peaking most inmates are African American, the second being Latin/Hispanic. I have an entire family side that has been growing weed and manufacturing meth for decades and only one has been to State Prison and that was for assault with a deadly weapon, we are all white, of Arian decent. Now if another ethnicity gets picked up with say over quarter an ounce of bud they get hammered with possession and intent to sell. My husband was picked up here for domestic violence, he is white, and was let out in 24 hours where as his cell mates that were African American w lesser charges would be held for an additional 12 hrs and FORBIDDEN to even call their girl friends. Im not a fan of the African American culture here., … but, when they are still getting the short end of the stick when it comes to charges, I understand why people act up and out. Private prisons make a ton of money and I do firmly believe the war on drugs is just a ruse . Very interesting

Also, my husband was brought into county lock up w enough drugs to get locked away for a good long time. He had about a pound of cocaine, several baggies of meth, bud, and all the paraphernalia your little heart could desire. He was pulled over, parked across train track, got out and took a piss in front of a highway Patrol man. He was on a suspended liscence. He was to go to prison for 10 years. The drugs mysteriously disappeared, he spent 5 days in county lock up and that was it. Small white town, he had a buddy who knew the Patrolman, knew my husband had me and the kids. Even the driving on suspended disappeared. The Judge couldnt find any evidence on paper or hard drive, but had seen my spouse in there enough to know he needed something, so he got 5 days. Crazy stuff happens here.

LOL! What is really interesting to me as well is the actual culture. I worked at this place connected to a Holiday Inn next to an air port. I waited on all kinds of people. I met several Canadians. Even tho we are neighbors, we have 2 completely different mind sets. Ive worked with people from the Dominican Republic that would be considered black, but their type of black and the American ghetto black are completely different cultures and have very little in common culturally speaking. The rudest foreigners I ever waited on were Australian, and by rude I mean strictly to the point w/o small talk which many midwesterners find very rude. I finally figured out it was cultural when an entire business group walked in from Australia and they were all the same. They most polite were Japanese and one Arab guy who was a regular who was face timing with his wife, grabbed me and had me wave at her and say hi LOL I think cultural differences play a huge part of who gets incarcerated. If you cant connect w an arresting officer or come off as rude, you will be going to jail LOL

yeah, he said all drug offence inmates add up to what, 17% of inmates? That does sort of take the wind out of the racist war on drugs being majorly responsible for the rise in incarcerations, doesn’t it? I mean, the war on drugs is a problem and a racist one, it’s just this guy’s idea that the number of charges laid versus dropped has doubled, huh?

I think the war on drugs gets used as an excuse for illegal search and seizures … then people get booked on completely different charges. Its kind of a mess like everything else LOL

America does have a crazy rate of incarceration. My theory (absolutely NO science or statistics behind it): at first, the remnants of those Puritan values (we don’t put people in public stocks, we plop them in prison), then, it became political: if I imprison everyone who even seems to threaten your way of life or offends you, I can get elected.

Ha! – Hey, the demographics are changing, the browns and blacks now outnumber the whites. If non-whites start voting, then prison populations should start getting whiter, huh?

How about the entire prison population, no matter the color or race get smaller?

Well, sure, whatever it takes to level the playing field. Why bitch about something that can benefit all? (mainly the poor with no money to pay a freakin’ lawyer?)

It would be much, much cheaper to just send all of them to Canada.

Neither Canada or Australia or handfuls of other countries will allow a felon in, even to visit. Keep up, people.

mrmacq, for the record, I resent that attitude by other countries. It’s the same as ours…………“you’ve done WRONG, we don’t want you”. Nice.

LOL – except we’re not locking you up or bombing you.

      1. GoldenPig2012

Neighsayer, are you talking to me? If so, sure, many countries won’t lock me up or bomb me, they’ll just decide I am not worthy of even VISITING their country. Gosh, that says a lot. Not every criminal is a mad bomber, a predator. Don’t bitch about America’s penchant for locking up everyone under the sun, then tell those released, “nope, you’re not a good enough person to come here”. Period.

I checked out the article. It seemed to me that he was saying something very close to what we did with our schools. Less people are passing so we need to lower what it takes to pass. More people are going to jail so we need to do something about the DA’s. I find both of those ideas kind of strange. Seems to me something like requiring a course or treatment for first time violent behavior would be a better idea.

yeah, someone convinced me that it’s more about guidelines and policies that lean toward fewer unpressed charges. DAs are elected though, so I worry a lot about them selling too much Law and Order sometimes.
